In India, where 886 million people are online and 650 million carry smartphones, the default usage pattern tilts heavily toward entertainment and social media. The NCAER India Human Development Survey Wave 3 found that roughly two-thirds of reported internet use is for entertainment, while about one-sixth is for education—a 4:1 ratio. The same device could be a tutor, a library, and a workshop; more often it is a theater and a casino.

This is not because users are lazy or because technology is evil. It is because the products that won were the products best optimized for engagement. The question of whether the user left better than they arrived was never written into the business model.

What "Better" Could Mean

“Better” sounds vague until you make it concrete. For a student, better might mean understanding a concept they did not understand before. For a worker, it might mean finishing a task without losing twenty-three minutes to a notification loop. For a citizen, it might mean learning one reliable fact about a local scheme or finding a way to help a neighbor. For a parent, it might mean an hour of genuine attention instead of parallel scrolling.

Point C3 “Leaving better” can be defined across at least four dimensions: cognitive clarity (did the user learn or focus?), practical skill (did they gain a capability?), social connection (did they strengthen a real relationship?), and civic relevance (did they become more able to act on a problem that matters?).

None of these require a platform to become a school or a charity. A music app can leave a listener with a deeper ear for rhythm. A news app can leave a reader with one clearly sourced fact. A messaging app can leave a friendship stronger. The standard is direction, not perfection.

Why the Current Default Fails

The attention economy is not neutral. It selects for design patterns that keep users returning: infinite scroll, autoplay, variable rewards, red-dot notifications, and algorithmic feeds trained on watch time. These patterns work because they exploit well-documented features of human attention, not because users are foolish.

The Economic Survey 2025–26, tabled in Parliament, explicitly flagged digital addiction among children as a growing concern with implications for learning, mental health, and productivity. It noted that India’s youth live in an intensely digital environment and that compulsive use can impose “real economic and social costs.” Point C4 When public evidence—from ASER’s student-screen findings to Gallup’s employee-engagement data to the Economic Survey’s addiction warning—points in the same direction, the default design pattern is no longer a private business decision. It is a public design problem.

This does not mean every app must be educational. It means the design defaults should make the better path at least as easy as the worse one. Right now, in most apps, the worse path is the default.

“Leave better than you arrived” is not a promise that every session will be transformative. It is a north star. It orients teams away from “how do we maximize time?” and toward “how do we respect the user’s time?”

The test can be applied at multiple scales:

  • Product teams can ask: what does our dashboard show the morning after a heavy-use session? Did the user sleep enough, finish a task, learn something, or connect with someone?
  • Regulators can ask: does the design make the harmful path the default for minors? Are age-appropriate defaults, friction, and transparency required?
  • Investors and advertisers can ask: are we funding products whose revenue depends on keeping users in a loop, or products users would still choose if they had full information?
  • Users and families can ask: after twenty minutes on this app, do I feel more capable or more scattered?

Point C5 The north star is useful precisely because it is imperfect. It does not require measuring every dimension of human flourishing. It asks teams to pick one or two user outcomes they are willing to be judged by and to make those visible.

Who Can Use This North Star

The framing applies to every layer of the system. A single developer cannot fix platform economics, and a single regulator cannot fix product culture. But each layer can move the default.

Builders can adopt alternative metrics. Instead of time spent, they can measure tasks completed, skills gained, or offline actions taken. They can add friction where endless scrolling is not the user’s stated goal. They can design chronological or user-chosen algorithms where real-time ranking is not essential.

Regulators can set floors. India’s IT Rules 2021 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 created some guardrails, but they do not yet require platforms to optimize for user flourishing. The EU Digital Services Act’s transparency and risk-management requirements offer one template; India’s own Tele-MANAS and digital-wellness curriculum initiatives offer another.

Educators and families can teach the test. If young people learn to ask “did this leave me better?” they become harder to extract from. Schools can pair digital literacy with attention literacy: not just how to use a tool, but how to notice when a tool is using you.

Citizens can reward substance-oriented platforms with attention, membership, and reputation. Network effects are real, but they are not immutable. Every migration begins with a small group of users deciding that a different default is worth the switch.

Point C6 The north star works only when multiple stakeholders use it simultaneously: builders who want to differentiate, regulators who set floors, investors who fund longer-term value, educators who teach attention literacy, and users who vote with their daily choices.

From Principle to Practice

What would this look like in practice? A few directional examples:

  • A short-form video app that prompts a user to save or annotate a video before watching another fifty. The prompt is friction, but friction in service of memory.
  • A social network that ranks posts partly by whether they lead to offline action or constructive replies, not only by reaction velocity.
  • An education platform that measures completion and transfer—can the student explain the idea to someone else?—rather than minutes watched.
  • A workplace tool that batches notifications and protects focused blocks, treating uninterrupted attention as a feature, not a bug.
  • A public service app that, after a transaction, tells the user one related scheme or right they might now be eligible for.

None of these are guaranteed to work. Each needs testing. But they share a direction: the user’s next step is more important than the platform’s next impression.
