India built one of the world’s largest digital-access stories. Cheap data, cheap phones, and Indic-language content brought hundreds of millions online. The infrastructure was built for connection. What grew on top of it was largely an attention-extraction economy: feeds, reels, games, and infinite scroll designed to capture time rather than cultivate it.

This series is an attempt to look at that inversion clearly, without shaming individuals or pretending the problem will solve itself. It asks what India—and any country moving through the same transition—stands to lose if the attention economy keeps winning, and what becomes possible if the same tools are turned toward learning, creation, and civic problem-solving.

The Six Arcs

The series is organized into six arcs. Each arc is a self-contained thread; each article can be read on its own, but the arcs build on one another.

  1. The Diagnosis — What the public evidence says about time use, attention, mental health, productivity, platform economics, and social trust in India and similar mobile-first countries.
  2. Historical and Human Frames — Why access to a powerful tool does not guarantee its benefits, and why attention habits matter across a human life.
  3. The AI Opportunity Cost — What artificial intelligence makes cheap, what India risks missing, and why the next few years are a compounding bet.
  4. Building Substance — Practical, low-friction paths for individuals, families, students, workers, and citizens to turn dead time into small acts of creation and learning.
  5. Designing for Substance — How platforms, metrics, regulation, and alternative business models could make substance the easier path.
  6. Synthesis and Action — How the threads fit together, who can pull which levers, and what questions remain unresolved.

The Series as a Journey (Bookmarks)

If you read the whole series from beginning to end, the argument moves through three larger movements. Each movement hands you a different lens, and each ends at the threshold of the next. You can treat these as bookmarks: read straight through, or jump to the movement that matches where you are right now.

Movement 1: Seeing the Trap — Arcs 1 and 2
Start with the present: how Indian internet time is actually spent, what short-form feeds do to attention, who profits, and what it costs in sleep, trust, and public life. Then step back into history to see that access to a powerful tool does not automatically produce benefit — printing presses, PCs, and cheap data all needed social choices before they became generative. By the end of this movement the question is no longer “Is this happening?” but “Why does this feel so familiar?”

Movement 2: The Fork Ahead — Arc 3
The diagnosis turns into stakes. Artificial intelligence is making creation, research, translation, and learning cheap at exactly the moment when billions of hours are being captured by extraction. The articles here ask whether India will compound that cheapness into deep tech and civic skill, or watch another transition pass while optimizing for convenience and attention. By the end of this movement the question becomes “What are we about to miss?”

Movement 3: The Path Out — Arcs 4, 5, and 6
The final movement moves from the individual to the system and back. It starts with what one person, family, student, or worker can do with reclaimed attention and AI as an assistant. Then it looks at how platforms, metrics, regulation, and business models could make substance the easier path. It closes with synthesis: a map of levers, product sketches, unresolved questions, and a reader’s guide. By the end the question is “What is the smallest version of this I can start building?”
