Much of the public debate about screens and attention treats the problem as if it were one thing: too much time on phones, too many reels, too little sleep. The numbers are real, but the framing is incomplete. Attention extraction in India is not a single crisis. It is a thread that changes colour as it moves through a human life.
A teenager’s fight with a feed is not the same as a young worker’s interrupted focus, a couple’s dinner-table silence, or an older adult’s inability to book a railway ticket online. Yet they are connected. The design patterns that capture childhood attention shape the study habits of adolescents, the productivity of workers, the quality of family time, and the isolation of the elderly. Childhood: The First Default
The earliest exposure often happens through a parent’s phone. By the time children reach their teens, the device is no longer borrowed; it is expected. A 2025 LocalCircles survey of more than 57,000 urban parents found that 49% of children aged 9–17 spend three or more hours a day on social media, video streaming, or online games, and 22% of parents reported more than six hours a day. Point C2 An earlier LocalCircles survey adds a sharper note: in 2023, among urban parents of children aged 9–17, only 8% said their children were free of addiction to social media, online games, or entertainment.
These numbers do not mean that every hour on a screen is harmful. They do mean that the default environment for growing up in India is now entertainment-first and friction-light. For most children, the phone arrives before the skill of choosing what to do with it.
Student Life: Anxiety in the Feed
Adolescence is when the split between educational and recreational use becomes visible. ASER 2024 reports that among 14–16-year-olds who can use a smartphone, 76% used it for social media in the reference week while 57% used it for education. The same device carries both worlds, but the platform defaults push toward the more sticky one.
The mental-health signal is hard to ignore. NCERT’s 2022 student mental-health survey, which covered more than 379,000 students across India, found that 81% felt anxious about studies, exams, and results, and 43% reported mood swings. By early adulthood, the attention problem shows up as workplace fragmentation. Gallup’s India country-level data from the 2025 State of the Global Workplace report puts employee engagement at 23%, with an estimated $351 billion in annual losses from disengagement. Engagement is not only about phones. Wages, job quality, and management matter too. Those figures are global benchmarks, not India-specific measurements, but they describe a familiar office rhythm.
Family Life: The Screen at the Table
The attention economy also extracts from relationships. A 2022 vivo “Switch Off” study of more than 1,000 married Indian couples found that 88% agreed excessive smartphone use was hurting their relationship with their spouse, and 66% felt it had weakened the bond. The NSSO Time Use Survey 2024 adds a wider social signal: volunteer and community participation has fallen by more than half since 2019. The drop is not caused by phones alone; the pandemic, urbanisation, and changing family structures all played a part. But when private feeds fill the hours that once went to neighbourhood meetings, temple committees, or school associations, the social fabric thins.
Old Age: Exclusion at the Other End
At the far end of the life span, the problem is not too much attention captured but too little access granted. A 2024 comparative study using the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) found that 91% of older Indian adults were digitally excluded — the highest rate among the lower-middle-income countries studied. This is the other edge of the same sword. The country is building public services, payments, and social connection on digital rails. For the elderly who cannot use those rails, the result is not distraction but exclusion. The same transition that captures young attention leaves older citizens behind.
The Thread, Not the Stages
Each life phase has its own data, its own pain points, and its own policy needs. Childhood needs better defaults. Students need study environments that compete with feeds. Workers need workplaces that protect focus. Families need shared spaces that are not colonised by private screens. Older citizens need accessible, non-digital alternatives and patient digital literacy support.
But they are not separate problems. A child’s entertainment-first defaults become a student’s divided attention, a worker’s fragmented day, a couple’s absent presence, and an older adult’s isolation from a digital society. Point C7 The harms of attention extraction are connected across generations, so solutions that only fix one life stage are likely to leak back into the others.
None of this is a reason to shame individuals for using the tools that are now built into daily life. The goal is to recognise the thread and to ask whether the same infrastructure could be designed to support a healthier arc: from curiosity in childhood, to depth in study, to focus in work, to presence in family, to dignity in old age.
